Dr. Prabal Kumar Sen


Profile

Dr Prabal K. Sen has superannuated as Professor of Economics and Founder-Chairperson of Entrepreneurship Development Centre (EDC) at XLRI Jamshedpur on September 30, 2017. Till that date, he had to his credit over 41 years of experience in teaching, training, research and corporate management. Before joining XLRI Jamshedpur, he had served

(i)    the Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA), Gujarat, as Chair Professor during 2001-07,
(ii)    a Public Sector Bank of India for over 23 years from 1978 to 2001 from where he resigned in October 2001 when he occupied a position in the senior management grade, and
(iii)    Burdwan University, West Bengal, as Lecturer in the Post Graduate Department of Economics from 1977 to  1978.

As the founder Chairperson of Entrepreneurship Development Centre (EDC) at XLRI, Prof. Sen was instrumental in launching a full-time Post-Graduate Programme for Certificate in Entrepreneurship Management (PGP-CEM) in XLRI during the academic session 2009-10, which continued for 7 consecutive batches. This programme was acknowledged as one of the most effective academic initiatives for promotion of entrepreneurship in India.

Prof. Sen has taught as a Visiting /Adjunct Professor at several premier institutions including, notably, (i) IIM Ahmedabad (ii) IIM Ranchi, (iii) IIM Amritsar, (iv) IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, (v) Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) – Nagaland Centre, (vi) Xavier Institute of Management and Research (XIMR), Mumbai, (vii) National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT) Nagpur, (viii) Praxis Business School, Kolkata and (ix) Kaziranga University, Jorhat (Assam) etc. for varying periods. Outside India, he had taught at XLRI Centres in Singapore and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Prof. Sen has written over 40 papers, 2 book chapters and a book review. He has presented papers in more than 35 conferences (national and international) and reviewed papers for a number of national and international journals on invitation from the said journals.
       
He has evaluated 26 PhD theses related to various Universities including (i) MSU of Baroda, (ii) University of Calcutta, (iii) University of Madras, (iv) Utkal University, (v) Nagaland Central University, (vi) IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, (vii) the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) Mumbai, (viii) Ravenshaw University, Cuttack,  (ix) KIIT University, Bhubaneswar and (x) Vidyasagar University, Midnapore, The theses so evaluated pertained to various aspects of economic development and policy, rural banking & finance, entrepreneurship and sustainability.

Conducted sessions on Entrepreneurship for professionals of Ethiopia at Addis Ababa as a part of the Twinning Programme between CSIR-India (Government of India) and MIDI-Ethiopia (Government of Ethiopia) in August-September 2018. He had been inducted by UNDP as an “Expert” for vetting the curriculum designed for training of women entrepreneurs in India.

Prof. Sen had been associated with academic administration (either as a member of the Board of Governors or the Board of Studies) across a number of institutions like (i) MS University of Baroda, (ii) Nagaland Central University, (iii) IIT (ISM), Dhanbad, (iv) Maulana Azad NIT, Bhopal, (v) IIHMR University, Jaipur, (vi) Vinoba Bhave University. Hazaribag and (vii) BML Munjal University, Gurugram etc., for varying periods of time. He has also functioned as a member of the Advisory Board for (a) the Global Summit on Management Cases 2014 organized by IIM Raipur and (b) the World Summit on Management Case Studies at IIM Ranchi in 2021.
 
Consultancy was provided, among others, to (i) the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India, (ii) Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI), (iii) Department of Finance, Government of Jharkhand and (iv) the National Scheduled Tribes Finance & Development Corporation (NSTFDC) - an organization under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India, etc., at varying points of time. He had been invited as a “State Guest” for providing “expert advice” to the Hon’ble Chief Minister and the Hon’ble Finance Minister, Government of Jharkhand as a part of a Pre-Budget Consultative Meet held at Ranchi in January 2022

Dr Sen had sat on the Boards of a number of corporate institutions including Ujjivan Small Finance Bank (headquartered in Bengaluru) as an Independent Director at varying points of time.
      
Prof. Sen is a life member of (i) the Indian Economic Association (IEA), (ii) the Indian Society of Agricultural Economics (ISAE) and (iii) the Indian Dairy Association (IDA).    

He has been conferred (i) the Best Teacher Award in September 2011 by the Higher Education Forum of India, Mumbai for his “outstanding contribution in the area of entrepreneurship and innovation,” and (ii) Lifetime Achievement Award in April 2017 by the Headstart Network Foundation in appreciation of his “contribution to the nurturing of entrepreneurship ecosystem, incubating, mentoring and guiding young entrepreneurs to their road to success”.
