Studying at MDI:
The PGPM / PGP-HR Programs
MDI offers two-year full-time MBA programs, called the Post Graduate Program in Management (Finance, Marketing, Strategy, Information Technology, Operations) and the Post Graduate Program in Human Resources. Each year is divided into three terms and hence, there are a total of six terms. The 1st year comprises all Core Courses (required to be taken by all students). Students are free to choose electives in the 2nd year as per their preferred area of specialization. Therefore, exchange students are generally enrolled in the 2nd year of the PGPM program.

Course Load
Students at MDI take a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 6 credits per term. Courses are usually 1 credit each but can also be of 0.5 credits.
Basic Course Structure for any subject offered:
- 1 credit implies 22 lectures of 1.5hrs to be held through the term (3 months)
- Case Study method of pedagogy followed for most subjects
Weights assigned to the different components for overall evaluation:
- Project/Assignment and presentation –15- 20%
- Quizzes held during the term – 15-20%
- Mid-Term Examination(after 11 lectures) – 25-30%
- End-Term Examination – 35-40%
One credit implies three contact hours per week in the classroom and about 6 hours of work outside the classroom in form of readings, assignments, projects etc. The parent school determines the number of credit hours taken by exchange students. Usually, exchange students find the program to be rigorous academically and take 4-5 one-credit courses from both the PGPM and PGP-HR programmes.

Airport to the campus:
Someone from the International Relations Committee will be at the airport to receive you. You will be charged the normal cab fare (up to Rs. 600). In case you don't find us at the airport (which should not happen at all!); the best way to get to the campus is by a Radio cab, which can be availed from the airport. The charges are Rs.15 / 19 (after 11 PM) per km + parking + toll charges. (Before doing so, please call us and we will coordinate). Prepaid taxis are also available at the airport.
Residence Permit:
On arrival in India foreign students are required to register at the Gurgaon Magistrate WITHIN 14 DAYS failing which they are charged a hefty fine. A member of the International Relations Committee will escort you to the magistrate once you have enrolled yourself at the institute. In case you are arriving in India well before the start of your program, plan your trip accordingly.
Currency Exchange:
You can exchange USD/Euro and all major Foreign Currencies at the Airport itself (after you clear immigration, you will find a Thomas Cook and other currency exchange counters at the airport itself). Even otherwise, there are many Forex dealers in Gurgaon and you may get your currency exchanged during normal working hours (10 am – 6 pm) from Monday to Friday.
Once you are on Campus! Settling down at MDI
Buddy Programme:
You will be assigned a student volunteer from MDI as a buddy. The buddy will help you get acquainted with MDI, campus life, courses and Gurgaon city.
Housing:
The programmes at MDI are fully residential and thus, exchange students are accommodated in the student's hostel at the Institute. Living on the campus, apart from being convenient, facilitates easy interaction with the regular MBA students who are all required to stay at the hostel. And this is the best part of your stay, as you shall soon find out! Your hostel room will be equipped with a cot, mattress, linens, curtains, study table and a chair. Bathroom and toilet facilities are common for each hostel floor. The bathroom and toilet facilities are cleaned every day and every bathroom has a hot water facility. Exchange students will be staying with other students on twin sharing basis.
Food:
The student hostel has a mess where meals are provided at a nominal rate. In addition, there is a canteen on campus and numerous restaurants within short distance from the campus. The student mess however takes care of most of your needs with the usual breakfast/lunch/dinner. The food is primarily Indian, which might prove to be a little spicy for exchange students. However, if you're used to Mexican food, this shouldn't be a problem. Also, it is only in the first 3-4 days that you might find it a bit spicy. Most exchange students adapt very well after the first week.
For all those night birds, the Canteen remains open till 3 in the morning. The Canteen serves tea, coffee, soft drinks, packaged juice, chips, noodles, sandwiches and a variety of Indian snacks etc. Since an independent contractor manages the Canteen, you will have to pay for everything. The Canteen however, isn't just an ordinary canteen- it's a great social spot at night, as you will soon discover, since life at MDI begins only after 9:00 p.m.!
Authentic Indian food can be had at various restaurants in and around Gurgaon. For homesick foodies there is a plethora of Italian, Mexican, Continental, Chinese, Lebanese and Thai food restaurants.
And for the fast food lovers, one can also order good pizza on campus! Dominos, Pizza Hut, Wow Italia, Pizza Corner and Nirulas are pizza chains that deliver to the MDI campus. There are three Pizza Hut Restaurants, which are located at a short distance (Sushant Lok, Metropoliatan Mall, DT Mall etc.). You will inevitably find a pizza delivery on campus almost everyday! Costs vary between Rs. 75- 150 per head. McDonalds, Subway, Wimpy's, etc. are nearby. Also, coffee outlets like Barrista and Café Coffee Day are a stone's throw away.
Water:
While it maybe advisable that you use Mineral Water during your first couple days at MDI, get used to the Water Cooler/Water Filter at MDI. Some reliable mineral water brands are Bisleri, Bailey, Aqua Fina and Kinley. (Author's Tip: get used to the water as fast as possible!) Water is typically available for Rs 10.00/ litre. Be advised that do not drink the water in the taps as it is not purified for human consumption.
Laundry:
Every floor in the hostels has a couple of washing machines for students to use. This facility is provided free of cost. The campus also has a washer man facility where students can get their clothes washed / ironed at reasonable charges.
Cooking:
There are no cooking facilities in the hostel rooms.
Telephones:
Every floor in a hostel has a telephone where students can receive calls. To make a local/long-distance call, you will have to go to one of the 3 telephone booths located in and around campus. These booths are usually open late into the night. Interested students can also hire/buy a cellular phone for their private use. (Author’s Tip: The Indian Cellular Telephony System uses GSM technology, which is incompatible with cell phones in North America. While Europe also uses GSM technology, please confirm compatibility of your cell phone with Indian Standards as different frequencies are used in India. In most cases there is a software lock that needs to be opened by your cellular operator).
Computers:
All hostel rooms are wired up and allow access to the Internet/Intranet through the MDI network. The library, hostel mess and academic block are Wifi enabled. However, students have to arrange for their own computer. One may bring along a laptop from his/her country, by declaring it at Customs when entering the country. To get logged onto the network, you will have to contact the Computer Centre Helpdesk. Your buddy will help you in this regard. Students without computers can of course use the Computer Centre, which is open till 4 a.m. and contains around 50 terminals. The Internet facility is available on computers through a 2 MBPS lease line.
Fruits/vegetables and General supplies:
For fruits/ vegetables you will have to go to the local Market. It takes 5 minutes to reach there if you take a rickshaw and 15 minutes if you prefer to walk down.
Text Books:
Textbooks for all courses are provided by MDI (a nominal charge will be levied for the books)
Banks:
There are large numbers of state and private sector banks in the local market area. All MDI students usually open accounts with one of these banks. Major international banks i.e. HSBC, Standard Chartered, Citibank, ABN-Amro etc. have their ATMs and bank branches in Gurgaon.
Your International ATM's can also be operated from the ICICI ATM in Sector 14, Gurgaon. If you still face problems you can always lend money from the students of MDI, they will always help you out. However please ensure that you return the money when you get your currency exchanged!!!!
