The Samaritans

"Samaritans" is the Societal Welfare Club of MDI. Its members work with an evangelistic zeal towards making a positive difference to the lives of lesser privileged people around them. Indeed the motto of the club says it all: ‘Empowering people, Changing lives’. "

Samaritans empowers and enables through a host of activities that span fostering greater awareness to concrete on the ground action. Further all, activities of Samaritans are voluntary. A completely student driven initiative, the amount of persistence and passion shown towards social causes by its members is no less than exemplary. Here is a brief overview of what kind of activities the club engages in:

  • The Literacy Drive:

  • This is the flagship activity of Samaritans. Volunteers take out an hour’s time from their hectic schedules to teach hostel & mess workers every night. The progress has been delightful. Some of the ‘students’ can work on MS-Word, MS-Excel and even operate their e-mail accounts and surf the internet.

  • Tikri Village Empowerment Project:

  • a village called Tikri nearby MDI. Volunteers take out time every week to teach village children through games, computers etcetera. They employ the method of experiential learning to make studying fun for children. Further, they organize elaborate competitions for the village children in association with an NGO called Sanskari. Their efforts have already begun to bear fruit so that the children look forward for their next ‘class’ called ‘Masti ki Pathshaala’.

  • Bihar Flood Relief:

  • Samaritans worked with the ‘Art of Living Foundation’ towards helping the flood victims in Bihar. The team collected substantial relief material from the MDI community and routed them to Bihar through the ‘Art of Living Foundation’.

  • Blood Donation Camps:

  • Samaritans, in association with the National Thalassemia Welfare Society organizes periodic blood donation camps where the entire campus comes forward to enthusiastically ‘donate blood to save lives’.

  • The Samaritans Week:

  • Samaritans observes the ‘Samaritans Week’ every year, where the key emphasis is to promote awareness about saving electricity and water through posters, e-mails, videos, etcetera.

  • Tree Plantation Week:

  • The club also organizes a tree plantation week. Saplings are planted in the campus and arrangements are made to ensure that they are taken due care of so that they go on to become flourishing trees. Thus, Samaritans creates a direct impact on the environment and ensures a better campus to live in.
    Illumina Stalls:
  • Old Clothes Donation:

  • The club also encourages people on the campus to donate old clothes that are then sent to various charity missions like the ‘Missionaries of Charity’. These charities make use of these clothes for relief work, and for providing clothing to underprivileged sections.

  • Illumina Stalls:

  • The club plans to host stalls at Illumina, the annual Diwali mela organized by MDI. The stall shall sell products made by orphans and destitute and return the revenues generated back to them.

  • Skits at Imperium:

  • Samaritans is planning to host skits to promote causes like health awareness at Imperium, the annual Inter B-School festival hosted by MDI.
With the passion and perseverance that the club has been showing in all of these efforts, the volunteers deserve to be called ‘The Good Samaritans’!
